Two like handed points can be joined branch to branch and not give a "virtually useless set up". It is only "useless" if you want to have more than one crossover. Congratulations on finding that inserting a straight makes such a good crossover. Another suggested layout would be like "Twinslip" but with both on the same side of the oval.
