Set #4563 Euro Freight Line can easily be
modified so that the headlights really work.
I have made detailed step-by-step instructions of how to do this,
here's what you need:
This is just a suggested parts list and you may be able to get the
required parts from other sources. The #5307 set provides just the light
brick (the other pieces aren't needed) so any of the headlight sets could
be used (#5307, #5308 or
#5310). The #5037 set provides a 2x4 conducting
plate and two 1x2 conducting plates but if you use set #5310 you
get the 2x4 conducting plate so all you need is a source of 1x2 conducting
plates. In my case, I went with set #5310 and stole two 1x2 conducting
plates from my #6482 Air Sea Rescue Helicopter. The helicopter is no
worse off since it is overengineered with 4 1x2 conducting plates used
to support the siren when just 2 will do fine (I just replaced the stolen
ones with ordinary 1x2 plates).
Step 1. Start with step 3 in the #4563 instruction
book, but note that the motor unit is the other way round, with the
conducting studs facing you. Step 2. Instead of the 2x3 black plate of the original
use a 2x2 black plate and one of the 1x2 white conducting plates. Step 3. Add another one of the 1x2 white conducting
plates on top of the first. Step 4. Put on the various bits of running gear. Step 5. Now put the special motor plate over the
motor and connect the 2x4 conducting plate to the 1x2 below it. Add the
light brick. Note the original 2x2 black plate is replaced by a 1x2
black plate. Step 6. More of the original pieces in place. The
grey slope piece is now 1 plate higher than before but it doesn't matter. Step 7. Add the headlight housing and light
transmitting element. The pistons are shown as well, they are in their
original position, but they now rest on half of the 2x4 conducting
plate and a new 2x2 white plate instead of the 2x4 grey plate. Step 8.
Now finish the locomotive as in the instruction book (from step 9
onwards).
That's it! Turn out the lights and run your train through the night!
