These buffers and magnetic couplings are used on every locomotive and wagon in the 9V range. The buffers are attached by a 2x2 plate, there are no studs so that it can move freely underneath a chassis when mounted on a bogie. The magnets mount on a coupling and are free to rotate so that they can flip over if necessary. You don't have to worry about matching a north with a south.
